Saving Private Ryan Trailer Analysis (War Genre)



 
At the start of the trailer there are close ups of letters and long shots of scenes of war. The shots quickly fade into one another while there is also dialogue of people reading the letters. This is effective because it makes the audience sympathise for the soldiers. In the next scene there is a conversation between two members of the army and they talk about three brothers who have died in the war. When they talk about the fourth brother the colonel says that they are going to send somebody to find him. During this piece of dialogue there is a close up of the character Pvt. James Ryan but his face is out of frame. This is effective because the audience will be curious to know what the character will look like. Next dramatic uplifting music starts to play as a close up of the main protagonist is shown and varies shots of soldiers are shown while white text explains that eight men are given the task of saving Pvt James Ryan. This makes the scene dramatic because it creates an uplifting atmosphere. Lastly there are close ups of the main protagonists during a fight scenes in the film and long shots and medium shots of war zones and the main protagonists trying to save civilians. This is accompanied by uplifting music leading up to a close up of the main protagonist Pvt James Ryan's eyes. This last scene is effective because the compilation shows the eight men going through many hardships to save one soldier and this makes the audience feel hopeful that they will save the main protagonist.
