There are lots of long shots to tell the audience where the film is being set.

Mise en scene
The boy in the yellow rain coat stands out against the dark background which makes him look innocent.

Editing
The trailer is slow paced at the beginning of the trailer but speeds up rapidly to create tension.

Sound
The music is dramatic and speeds up and slows down depending on the speed of the editing. There are also long pauses after fast pace scenes which creates tension.

  At the start of the trailer there are close ups of letters and long shots of scenes of war. The shots quickly fade into one another while there is also dialogue of people reading the letters. This is effective because it makes the audience sympathise for the soldiers. In the next scene there is a conversation between two members of the army and they talk about three brothers who have died in the war. When they talk about the fourth brother the colonel says that they are going to send somebody to find him. During this piece of dialogue there is a close up of the character Pvt. James Ryan but his face is out of frame. This is effective because the audience will be curious to know what the character will look like.
