I am Legend Trailer Analysis (Post ApocalypticGenre)



 
The trailer of I Am Legend starts with a fast paced compilation of lots of close ups of the main protagonist and long shots of people panicking. Loud fast paced music is played over the opening of the trailer which creates tension in the audience. After this section of the trailer the screen cuts to black and the words say "In 2012, All human life has ended. One man has survived". There are long shots of the deserted city and close up shots of the main protagonist. The music in this scene is slow and dramatic and the main protagonist's voice can be heard. This is effective because the close up shots make the audience empathise with the main protagonist and the music creates a tense atmosphere. Towards the middle of the trailer tension is created by using a close up of a broken window and shrieks coming from the broken window. The trailer also announces in text that "the last man on earth, is not alone". This develops tension because the audience don't know who or what might the trailer be referring to. Next the screen cuts to black and fades into the next scene when the main protagonist is pointing a torch into a dark room. The music in this scene slowly increases in volume until something jumps out from the dark at the main protagonist. Then the music becomes dramatic and chase scenes and explosions are shown from the film. The pace of the editing speeds up and makes the compilation of scenes exciting to watch.

  At the start of the trailer there are close ups of letters and long shots of scenes of war. The shots quickly fade into one another while there is also dialogue of people reading the letters. This is effective because it makes the audience sympathise for the soldiers. In the next scene there is a conversation between two members of the army and they talk about three brothers who have died in the war. When they talk about the fourth brother the colonel says that they are going to send somebody to find him. During this piece of dialogue there is a close up of the character Pvt. James Ryan but his face is out of frame. This is effective because the audience will be curious to know what the character will look like.
