Avatar Trailer Analysis (Sci-Fi Genre)


 
 
When the trailer starts there are long shots of space stations, space ships and robots. Instantly the audience know that his will be a Sci-Fi movie because of the futuristic setting. Calm music plays over the top of the panning shots of an alien planet. This is effective because it tells the audience that the world is at an equilibrium. Later on in the trailer an alien is shown inside a tank and the main protagonist is put into a machine so that he can control the alien. During this scene the music speeds up and you can hear a heart beat. This is effective because it creates suspense before the main protagonist gains control of the alien. After this scene the music speeds up and there are action scenes which include military robots and alien predators. There are many medium shots and close up shots of the main protagonist fighting battles with the human military. This creates tension in the audience and makes them question why the main protagonist is fighting against the human military. At the very end of the trailer it shows the main protagonist falling in love with a female alien. This might attract more people to come watch the film because there is a love interest.

  At the start of the trailer there are close ups of letters and long shots of scenes of war. The shots quickly fade into one another while there is also dialogue of people reading the letters. This is effective because it makes the audience sympathise for the soldiers. In the next scene there is a conversation between two members of the army and they talk about three brothers who have died in the war. When they talk about the fourth brother the colonel says that they are going to send somebody to find him. During this piece of dialogue there is a close up of the character Pvt. James Ryan but his face is out of frame. This is effective because the audience will be curious to know what the character will look like.
